How to Arrange Desktop Icons in All Versions of Windows (Keep Apps, Documents, and Files Organized) Automatically


Have you ever noticed that the shortcut icons on your desktop suddenly become disorganized after you increase or decrease their size? This can happen when you change the icon size using your mouse's scroll wheel, when the icons become larger or smaller, their positions and overall layout on the desktop can change as well.

You may also accidentally move some shortcut icons to random positions, making your desktop look cluttered and disorganized, this can be especially annoying if you have several apps that you use every day and suddenly have trouble finding them because their positions have changed.

Instead of manually rearranging every shortcut icon one by one, you can use the Restore Desktop Icon Layout application to save and restore the position of your desktop icons whenever needed.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to automatically restore and organize the shortcut icon layout on your Windows desktop, so, how do you do it? let's get started with the tutorial..

Tutorial:

  2. Once you are on the Sordum website, specifically on the article page, scroll down until you find the small silver-colored "Download" button.
  3. If you have found it, now click that "Download" button.
  4. You will now be taken to the next page, here, just simply wait until the file you want appears and is ready to be downloaded, however, if you are using Google Chrome's built-in download feature, the file should automatically begin downloading in the background, you can check its progress or find the downloaded file in your Google Chrome download history.
  5. Once you have downloaded it, extract the files from the downloaded archive.
  6. After extracting the files, you will find a new folder containing the extracted files, open that folder.
  7. Inside the folder, you will see two files, make sure you use the version that matches your laptop or computer's system architecture so the application can work properly.
  8. Once you know whether your laptop or computer uses a 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, run the appropriate version by right-clicking it and selecting "Run as Administrator".
  9. A User Account Control (UAC) window should then appear, then click "Yes" button to continue.
  10. Once the application is open, first arrange the shortcut icons on your desktop manually, in other words, organize all the files, folders, and shortcut icons on your desktop and place them wherever you want them to be.
  11. Once you have finished organizing your desktop, return to the Restore Desktop Icon Layout application, now click the button with the floppy disk icon in the application window.
  12. Wait for a few moments, once the layout has been saved, try moving your shortcut icons or files around to make your desktop look messy or disorganized. (Do not move any files from your desktop into a folder, move them somewhere outside the desktop, or send them to the Recycle Bin, because files that are moved away from the desktop cannot be restored to their previous positions.)
  13. Once you have rearranged the icons or files, double-click the name shown under the "Name" column. (If you are not sure which column I mean, you should see the "Resolution" column next to "Name", followed by the "Date - Time" column, then the "Detail" column, and finally the "ID" column. Double-click the name shown under the "Name" column).
  14. The files or shortcut icons that you moved around should now return to their original positions.

Conclusion


The process is very easy and simple, however, what happens if a file has already been moved and is no longer on the desktop, such as when it has been sent to the Recycle Bin, moved into a folder, or transferred to another drive?

Unfortunately, this application does not work like Deep Freeze, where everything can be restored to its previous state even after unwanted files or folders have been deleted, although its functionality may seem somewhat similar, this application only works with the items that are currently visible on your desktop, if a file is moved into a folder, sent to the Recycle Bin, or transferred to another drive or partition, it cannot be brought back to the desktop simply by clicking the restore option in the application, no matter how many times you click it.

The floppy disk icon in the application is used to save the current positions of your desktop icons and files ,so you only need to save or record the layout once after you have arranged everything the way you want it.
